Objective

To improve the visitor experience by improvement in the journey time and efficient use of parking locations.

Description

On sunny days the beach of Scheveningen is very popular. The municipality of The Hague would like to retain this popularity and would rather enlarge it. A successful day at Scheveningen beach has several factors that depend on success or disappointment. A large part of these factors is beyond the sphere of influence of the municipality. Weather and the temperature of the sea water can unfortunately not be regulated. Positively influencing the experience of the visitors is the trip to and from Scheveningen and the effort or convenience to park there. That is why the Traffic Management and Public Lighting departments and the Parking Department, with the cooperation of the Information Management and Communication Department, have taken the initiative for a pilot "Smarter to Scheveningen" under the headings of Hospitable The Hague and Smart City The Hague.

Approach:

The pilot is successful if it can be demonstrated that:

·       A link between the parking data of BKS and the parking department can be made with the travel time data from traffic management for the real-time route, travel and parking information;

·       No deterioration, but preferably an improvement in the travel time on the policy preferred routes to Scheveningen

·       More efficient use is made of the parking locations

·       there is a reduction in search traffic in the residential areas (via city-channel survey)

·       Staying longer in the area around the boulevard (social media monitor and survey entrepreneurs)

·       A high public appreciation for the day at the beach in Scheveningen appears from the social media monitor. The spin-off for the municipality is: Greater efficiency for the citizen/visitor through cooperation between the services and departments

·       Better information provided through the smart combination of data sources (open, own data and external data and social media)

·       Putting the citizen / visitor centre stage instead of the technique.

Inputs

Main INPUTS for this project are:

1. Road transport data (traffic, public transport)

2. Parking data

Outputs

Main OUTPUTS of this project are:

  1. Road transport advice for selection of best and fastest possible routes.

  2. Reduce traffic congestion

  3. Availability status of parking lots and their advance booking

  4. Availability status of local mode of transport (bike, boat, tram, bus) from beatch to surrounding area and vice versa.

Project Assets

App based system containing all the details of transport facilities, parking lots, suggesting fastest routes etc.

Project Struggles

The project is implemented and running successfully, but is still open for additional options that can be added to parent project.

Project Processes

Linking the Parking department with the traffic management journey time data for the purpose of real-time route, journey and parking information to reduce traffic congestion and distribute the traffic around the area. This project covers majorly all means of transport like trams, boats, Public Transport, Cars/Vehicles, Cyclists, disabled people.  DATA collection and processing is done by linking real-time data of journey and parking information. It uses information from traffic & parking and gives advise based on it.
